Classical Star

One of my favourite tv shows of the year just finished - what a lovely treat. Classical Star - it was so hard to pick a winner. Those kids were so awe-inspiring - made me want to pick up my flute again - I got my grade 4 exam, y'know.

The winner, Sophie Cashell, was on Radio 3's In Tune programme this evening (Weds) playing one of Chopin's scherzi. She came across well in the interview segments.

cool. did you watch it? that was one of her weakest aspects actually - how she came across. but her piano-playing was stunning.

Classical Star? No -- I can't abide reality shows. In fact, anything with 'real' people being 'real' on it I can't abide, chat shows, quiz shows, fly-on-the-wall docs, any of that stuff -- give me scripted shows everytime (news and proper docs included). 'Real' people being 'real' make me squirm.

But enough about me and my issues :)

oh i love reality tv! what's wrong with real people!
you should have made an exception for Classical Star - there was nothing fake about it, it wasn't like X-FActor at all! Such a good show.

Oh, no -- real people actually being real? That makes me squirm even more! I'm the shy, retiring type; just the thought of people putting themselves on display gives me the jitters. Rein it in, hide it away, I say!

In Japan they have the twinned concepts of "omote" -- public face -- and "ura" -- private feelings (literally "front" and "back" i.e. on view and hidden), and people there have a clear understanding of when it is appropriate to display one and not the other. Television is no place for a display of ura. It just isn't! Hide it away! :)
